Inspired by Dayton’s role in the 1995 Peace Accords, this show invites viewers to reflect on how peace is pursued, protected, or broken.

    About the Juror:

Daniel Esquivia Zapata is an Afro-Colombian artist and educator. He is an Assistant Professor of Art at Auburn University, specializing in drawing. He holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BA in Studio Art from Benedict College (Historical Black College).  Before teaching at Auburn, Daniel taught at various institutions, including Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, focusing on a wide range of drawing courses on human anatomy, figure drawing, fundamental drawing, and experimental drawing. In addition to his teaching. Daniel has a strong exhibition record with solo and group shows across the United States, Colombia, and internationally. His work has been featured in venues such as the Whatcom Museum and the Richard Demato Gallery. He has also participated in numerous artist residencies, including the Santa Fe Art Institute and a fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center; recently, he was a summer artist at 701 CCA in Columbia, SC, and was selected as a 2025 visiting artist to the Gibbes Museum of Art. His contributions to the art community extend beyond the classroom and gallery. He has been involved in public art projects, including murals that address memory and social justice themes. His research and presentations often explore the intersection of art, violence, and historical memory, reflecting his commitment to using drawing as a tool for social change and as a mode of inquiry.

The Dayton Society of Artists is pleased to present Sisters, a cyanotype series by our member Suzi Hyden. This show runs concurrently with the DSA's annual juried show, PEACE TALKS.

    About the Work:

These Sisters find their perfect expression through the timeless and environmentally conscious medium of cyanotype on rust dyed, repurposed, vintage clothing. Inspired by females who have preceded us, each vintage gown represents a timeless woman, each with her distinct experiences and memories, personalities and strengths. The repurposed metal fencing and tomato cages are shaped to suggest her attitude; the cyanotype of botanicals hint to her character, drawing upon symbolic meanings of the featured plant from various folk cultures and traditions; the rust-dying whispers her past, suggesting the lasting marks of her life-lessons. I invite the viewer to spend time getting to know each Sister; let her tell you her personal story of her experiences as a woman, and thank her for her sacrifices to help women continue to strive forward in our modern days.

    About Suzi Hyden:

I am a cyanotype artist whose work celebrates the environment by combining elements from nature and repurposed materials. I use local botanicals and other objects I find in nature to create my cyanotypes, which are also known as sun prints or blueprints. Cyanotype is an eco-friendly, non-silver, alternative photographic process. Images expose in the sun, develop in water, and the main chemical component is iron, the most abundant element on the planet. In addition, I show my love for nature by repurposing materials for my art. I often recycle vintage fabrics, reuse papers, and repurpose found objects as the substrates and framing for my cyanotypes. Ensuring that art is accessible to everyone is one of my primary goals when I lead workshops, and cyanotype is a process that practically anyone can successfully do.

    Bubbles & Boards

    A Members' Social Event

    Sunday, June 8th - 1 PM to 3 PM

Please join the Dayton Society of Artists in a free members' social! We’re hosting a party at our gallery, opening our doors to our members and guests for what we’re calling Bubbles and Boards. We’ll have all kinds of bubbles, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and a charcuterie spread for some afternoon grazing.

Bubbles & Boards coincides with our annual member’s meeting. The Board and Director will take a moment around 2 PM to give a brief review of the organization, and members can vote on new items and board members. More than anything else though, this is our chance to get together again and enjoy the amazing community of artists that makes up DSA.

Members are allowed to bring a plus one to the event; RSVP is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

Experience Suzi’s powerful work firsthand, where each "Sister" finds perfect expression through the timeless and eco-conscious medium of cyanotype on rust-dyed, repurposed vintage clothing. Inspired by the strength and stories of women who have preceded us, each piece captures unique experiences, personalities, and memories, brought to life through the symbolism of botanicals and carefully sculpted forms.

Suzi invites you to connect with each Sister’s story—her sacrifices, her lessons, and her lasting impact on the women of today.

Enjoy an artist talk with Suzi Hyden, snacks, and wine as we close out this meaningful exhibition together.

This will also be your last chance to view PEACE TALKS, on view in the gallery alongside Sisters.

About: Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (1940–2015) was an exceptionally prolific artist who used traditional and unconventional, non-traditional materials to create a staggering body of work. Her drawings, paintings, sculptures, and mixed media textiles chronicle her family’s African ancestry, her travels worldwide, and her witness to African American life.

The MacArthur Award recipient was also a researcher, historian, poet, author, illustrator, composer, and teacher who used her vast talents to draw harmony into a discordant world. When Robinson passed away, she entrusted her art, writing, personal belongings, and home studio to the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, her hometown museum.

Aminah Robinson: Journeys Home, a Visual Memoir brings together some of the artist’s most profound works and words, produced over seven decades from 1948 to 2012. Drawing upon Robinson’s historical research, folklore, and personal narrative, the exhibition presents a visual memoir of the artist’s life and a compelling tableau of the African American experience.

Details: DSA will not be providing any transportation, however, feel free to carpool with a fellow artist to see the exhibition! We will be meeting in the lobby.
